And as we arrived at the Stena port of Fishguard on a stormy July morning to find our fast ferry had been cancelled due to bad weather, I was beginning to think they werent just pulling my leg. To be fair, it was one of the many windy and stormy days of the summer. Only one thing to do: sit in the car, watch the rain hammering down outside, pick up a magazine and wait three hours for the next ferry crossing, demonstrating the kind of Dunkirk spirit that British holidaymakers should always pack. Three-and-a-half hours after sailing from Fishguard, my partner and I finally drove onto Irish soil. It had only been seven hours since we left our B&B in Pembrokeshire and we had another three-hour drive ahead of us before we finally reached our destination of Cork in the south west. However, the great thing about a Stena self-drive short break, which you dont get with a long-haul holiday, is that you can take your own car which gives you freedom to explore Ireland at your leisure. You could head for the buzz of the capital city Dublin or the countryside of Wicklow. We chose Irelands largest county, Cork, with its lush green countryside, rugged coastline and pretty fishing villages as our destination. Our base for the three-night break was Jurys Hotel Cork and by the time we checked in, it had finally stopped raining. Its true what they say about the Irish weather: If you dont like it, wait five minutes.
